Just Do It lifts the lid on climate activism and the daring troublemakers who have crossed the line to become modern-day outlaws. Documented over a year, Emily James' film follows these activists as they blockade factories, attack coal power stations and glue themselves to the trading floors of international banks despite the very real threat of arrest.

“Making an example” – Free Frank Fernie

Half of the Just Do It team are here in York at the lovely City Screen Picturehouse, where the panel discussion with director Emily James gets underway in 25minutes. We’re very happy to also have Nick from York Stop the Cuts with us as well as Joe Sellers from the Free Frank Fernie campaign.

For those of you who don’t know, Frank is a 20-year-old student and charity worker from York. On March 26th, Frank joined the anti-cuts protest in London and was detained in a police kettle outside of Fortnum and Mason’s. After the event, Frank was charged with throwing two balsa wood sticks while trapped in the kettle. Frank came to London to protest peacefully. Having given himself up, and despite the recommendation of the probation officer that he not be given a custodial sentence, Frank was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.

The Free Frank Fernie Campaign has been set up to support Frank and his family by campaigning and fundraising throughout Frank’s appeal against this unjust and entirely disproportionate sentence. The judge stated the ruling was intended to “make an example” of him. Support the right to protest.
