Allowed unprecedented access, Emily James filmed the clandestine activities of several environmental direct action groups across the UK for more than a year. Always in the thick of it and with ever her trusty camera to hand she saddled up with The Climate Rush “Bike Rush” as they brought Westminster to a standstill, pitched up with The Climate Camp as they occupied Blackheath, masked up with The Great Climate Swoop as they stormed the fences at Ratcliffe-on-Soar coal power station, and then accompanied them all to wintry Copenhagen as they took their protest to the streets outside the UN COP 15 climate talks. And those are just the headlines!
THIS IS A STORY OF…
3 ORGANISATIONS
· Climate Camp – they camp, for the climate.
· Climate Rush – they dress up as suffragettes, for the climate.
· Plane Stupid – pointing out that planes are stupid, for the climate.
2 LOOSE AFFILIATIONS
· World Association of Carbon Traders – Formed for the COP 15 protests, this newly-formed and sharply-dressed trading association took to the streets of Copenhagen to sell “permits to pollute” to those meddling do-gooder environmentalists. It’s satire, of course.
· The Bike Bloc – putting the fun firmly between their legs, the Bike Bloc employed bicycles as a tool for civil disobedience in Copenhagen for the COP15 protests.
1 DOMESTIC EXTREMIST
· The simply lovely Marina Pepper – The police may call Marina a “Domestic Extremist”, but we know her as an exceptionally well-mannered lady who likes a nice cup of tea. And as a full-time anarcho-syndicalist revolutionary who is a key member of Climate Camp & Climate Rush and a veteran of the Vestas factory protest, quite frankly we think she deserves one. Milk 2 sugar?
Doing these sorts of things…
· Building bikes, riding bikes, blockading with bikes
· Pulling down and cutting through fences
· Serving fish and chips, occasionally
· Fighting climate change, always.
It’s a story of people standing up for what they believe in and making themselves heard. It’s a story of rules being broken and boundaries being pushed. It’s a story of people who Just Do It!
JUST DO IT: a tale of modern-day outlaws.
